Sitamarhi

Sitamarhi, town, northwestern Bihar state, northeastern India. It lies on the western bank of the Lakhandai River in the fertile Middle Ganges (Ganga) Plain. Sitamarhi is a station on the North Eastern Railway and is connected by roads with the nearby Nepal frontier. It is a commercial centre trading in rice, timber, oilseeds, and hides. A large Ramanavami fair, celebrating the birth of Lord Rama, is held in spring with considerable trade in pottery, spices, brass ware, and cotton cloth. A cattle fair held in Sitamarhi is the largest in Bihar state. The town is sacred as the birthplace of the goddess Sita (also called Janaki), the wife of Rama. According to Hindu mythology, Sita was born out of an earthen pot while her father, King Janaka, was plowing the fields nearby, praying for rain. It is claimed that the king built a tank (water reservoir) at the place where Sita was found. Sitamarhi has a pond and a temple dedicated to Sita, as well those devoted to Hanuman, Mahadevi, and Ganesha.

Allahabad

Prayagraj, also called Prayag, formerly Allahabad or Ilāhābād, city, southern Uttar Pradesh state, northern India. It is situated at the confluence of the Ganges (Ganga) and Yamuna (Jumna) rivers, about 65 miles (100 km) west-northwest of Varanasi (Benares). Prayagraj stands on the site of ancient Prayag, a holy city that was comparable in fame to Varanasi and Haridwar. Prayag’s importance in the ancient Buddhist period of Indian history is attested by the inscriptions on a pillar attributed to the 3rd-century-BCE Mauryan emperor Ashoka. The pillar—which is believed to have been erected in a nearby locality and moved to Prayagraj in Mughal times—still stands inside the gateway to the old Prayagraj fort, which is situated strategically at the confluence of the two rivers. The site’s religious importance to Hinduism persists. Each year a festival takes place at the rivers’ confluence, and every 12th year a much larger festival, Kumbh Mela, is attended by millions of devotees.

Ayodhya

All four of these cities are, simply put, iconic, in many of the faiths that have a large, strong presence in India. The draw of these cities among pilgrims is the numerous temples and other locations that are sacred per their beliefs, which are scattered all throughout the territory that these cities take up. For others, seeing the way the life here blends in with the culture and how integral the religion and traditions of the people living here is in their day to day affairs is a fascinating, enlightening and hugely educational experience that is sure to broaden their perspective and understanding of the culture in India. The colourful, loud and endlessly energetic dance of life that takes place here, with people travelling to these places in droves almost all throughout the year, but especially during festivals, is sure to be overwhelming for the senses. Yet at the same time, witnessing it all unfold with your own eyes is sure to make for unfathomably rewarding memory. Here is a glimpse at some of the places you may be visiting through TravelTriangle’s Kashi Gaya Prayag Ayodhya tour package.

Gaya

Bodh Gaya contains one of the holiest of Buddhist sites: the location where, under the sacred pipal, or Bo tree, Gautama Buddha (Prince Siddhartha) attained enlightenment and became the Buddha. A simple shrine was built by the emperor Ashoka (3rd century BCE) to mark the spot, and this was later enclosed by a stone railing (1st century BCE), part of which still remains. The uprights have representations of the Vedic gods Indra and Surya, and the railing medallions are carved with imaginary beasts. The shrine was replaced in the Kushan period (2nd century CE) by the present Mahabodhi temple (designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2002), which was itself refurbished in the Pala-Sena period (750–1200), heavily restored by the British archaeologist Sir Alexander Cunningham in the second half of the 19th century, and finally restored by Myanmar (Burmese) Buddhists in 1882. The temple’s central tower stands 180 feet (54 metres) above the ground. A museum contains various Buddhist relics. Bodh Gaya is the site of Magadh University (1962). Pop. (2001) 30,857; (2011) 38,439 .

Vindhyachal

Vindhyachal, a town in Mirzapur district, situated on the banks of River Ganga is one of the most respected Shaktipeeths of Goddess Vindhyavasini. Referred in the ancient scriptures, Goddess Vindhyavasini is believed to be the instant bestower of blessings. Best known for the several shrines dedicated to the Goddess, this holy town also offers the visitors a chance to come close to natural wonders. Though Vindhyachal is a bustling town soaked with religious fervour, there is also a tranquil side not to be missed by the visitors. Located on the banks of River Ganga, the land boasts green landscapes giving nature lovers their share of treat.

Annapurna

Annapurna, Nepali Annapurna Himal, massif of the Himalayas in north-central Nepal. It forms a ridge some 30 miles (48 km) long between the gorges of the Kali (Kali Gandak; west) and Marsyandi (east) rivers north of the town of Pokhara. The massif contains four main summits, two of which—Annapurna I (26,545 feet [8,091 metres]) and II (26,040 feet [7,937 metres])—stand at the western and eastern ends of the range, respectively; Annapurna III (24,786 feet [7,555 metres]) and IV (24,688 feet [7,525 metres]) lie between them. Annapurna I is the world’s 10th highest peak. Although climbers had reached 28,150 feet (8,580 metres) on Mount Everest by 1924, Annapurna I became famous in 1950 as the first peak above 26,000 feet (8,000 metres) to be ascended to the summit. The feat was achieved by a French expedition led by Maurice Herzog, who with Louis Lachenal reached the top on June 3. Annapurna IV was climbed on May 30, 1955, by a German team of Harald Biller, Heinz Steinmetz, and Jürgen Wellenkamp; and Annapurna II on May 17, 1960, by the British climbers Richard Grant and Chris Bonington and the Sherpa Ang Nyima in an expedition led by James O.M. Roberts. In 1970 an all-women Japanese climbing team scaled Annapurna III.
